Greek For Absolute Beginners 19.30-21.30 Course starts 27 September 2016. Room: Library. All materials provded by the tutor.
Conversational Greek Wednesday 19.30 – 21.30 This course is designed for people who have studied Modern Greek previously, for two years perhaps, and want to practise speaking it. No books will be used, but the tutor will provide material to be used. Ideally the class will be conducted entirely in Greek, but grammar points will be revised briefly in English when necessary. The course starts on 28th September 2016.
French Conversation Thursday 19.30 – 21.30 This course is designed for people who have already learnt some French, perhaps having studied it at secondary school years ago. You are not expected to be fluent or confident when you enrol. No books will be used, but the tutor may bring pictures or magazines occasionally. This class is not a debating society: there will be no discussions on politics, economics, religion or philosophy; otherwise anything goes (but not personal questions about anyone’s private life). The class is essentially light-hearted: the tutor doesn’t care what students talk about, as long as it is in French. Ideally, the class will be conducted entirely in French, but grammar points may be revised briefly in English when necessary. The course starts on 29 September 2016.
Enrolment If you are dubious about enrolling in a class that may not suit you, just come to the first evening and try it for free for an hour. Students will enrol on the first evening during the short break at 20.30. If you decide then to say goodbye and not enrol it will not be a problem.
Students enrol and pay for one term at a time. Fees can be paid by cheque or cash, but not by card. Fees for the Autumn term (10 sessions):
Standard fee: £100
Two at the same address: £175
The tutor Rod McGough (Mac) studied in England, Germany and France. He has taught in secondary schools and colleges in England, and in schools, colleges and university in France, where he lived for several years.
Facilities Room U57 is on the second floor. The library is on the first floor. If stairs are a problem for you, please contact the tutor beforehand, as he as a key to the lift. There will be a short break at 20.30, we suggest you bring your own flask or bottle. Toilets are on the ground and third floor.
No red tape These are independent classes: their aim is to promote learning, not to satisfy government criteria. There will, therefore, be no requests to know your age educational background or ‘ethnicity’. If you don’t object to telling the tutor in confidence your address and telephone number, they will only be used in case he needs to contact you and will not be on any computer.
During the term there will be no assessments or evaluations, no interruptions by office staff, no strangers sitting in to observe the class, and no unwanted or unheard of qualifications.
Finding the school and room U57 and the LRC Go down Claro Road and turn right into Ainsty Road. Drive into the campus entrance, passing St Robert’s Primary School on your left. Go on to the roundabout and take the first exit. There is a car park on the right, and a bigger car park on the left. Walk through the gate in the high metal fence and go into the main (‘Student and Community’) entrance. Turn left and left again to the staircase. Go up to the first floor for the library. U57 is the first room on the left.
Will your class form? We need at least seven students for a class to be viable. If you want to enrol, please contact the tutor fairly soon on 075303 29240 (telephone/text/voicemail).
