Vertical Mentor Groups and Assembly Programme
The school´s tutor groups are known as Vertical Mentor Groups (VMG) because each has students of differing ages from Year 7 to the Sixth Form. VMG time is from 10.30 to 10.45 daily.
At Harrogate High School we believe that is it essential to equip our students for life in modern Britain and feel that championing values such as self-confidence, respect and resilience is core to helping us to achieve this. Our VMG programme is one step in this process and as a result of this, students are able to leave their VMG with a wealth of knowledge, in a range of issues, which will be beneficial to their development.
Fundamental British values are woven throughout the programme and actively promoted in line with new guidance from Ofsted. In addition to this each weeks VMG programme is tracked against the PSHE Entitlement Framework and against SMSC (spiritual, moral, social, cultural). This ensures that all students get the broadest and most enriched experience that is possible.
The VMG programme covers all 9 key themes of the wellbeing entitlement and these are complimented by an assembly programme that run in line with VMG activities. The themes include:
1. Sex and Relationships Education
2. Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco
3. Emotional health and wellbeing
4. Physical and personal wellbeing
5. Online safety
6. Financial capability
9. Risk taking
All VMG programmes are delivered using the new Virtual Learning Environment. Some topics are also delivered using enquiry based learning. This requires students to work as part of a team to research and produce a presentation on the given topic/theme. Examples of some of the enquiry based work that has already been completed can be seen below.
VMG groups also compete for continent points thus promoting healthy competition throughout the school. Points are added to the inter-house board and prizes will be awarded at the end of the academic year for the winning continent!
